About me

Matthijs Bal was born in 1981 in Leiderdorp, the Netherlands. He studied work and organizational psychology at Utrecht University, which he started in 1999. In 2005, he started his PhD-project on “Psychological Contracts of Older Workers with their Organizations” at VU University Amsterdam, department of Management & Organization. In 2008, he spent three months as visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. In 2009, he obtained his PhD cum laude. From 2010-2012, Matthijs Bal worked as an assistant professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, after which he returned as an associate professor at VU University Amsterdam, department of Management & Organization. In 2014, Matthijs moved to the United Kingdom to work at the University of Bath, and in 2016, he became professor of Responsible Management at the University of Lincoln, UK. His research focuses on workplace dignity, individualization of work, older workers, motivation to continue working after retirement, idiosyncratic deals, and the effects of reading fictional narratives on work behaviors. Matthijs Bal lives in the Netherlands and is married and blessed with a wonderful son. His interests outside academia include cycling and literature.
